Look out over the world-class Hololio polo grounds from the veranda of this 1892-vintage Kauri homestead, and while preparing a BBQ. Set in the middle of a working farm, there's plenty of room inside and out, plus a shared solar-heated pool. Perfect for wedding groups, there is perfect light for makeup in the South facing linen room, and charming photo locations in and around the house. The adjacent Poolhouse is also available for booking, for extended celebrations with family and friends.
The Hololio Polo Club grounds sit directly below Hololio House - there is polo to watch three times a week January - March, and horse exercising September to April. In winter, we run some 1400 sheep.
Hololio Farm is a 200 acre working horse and sheep farm with 7km of river trails, and exciting planting and regeneration projects. All guests have access to the walking/cycling trails over the farm and private entry from the farm to the Clevedon walking trails which lead to the Clevedon Showgrounds and Clevedon Farmer's Market.
Our 1892 solid kauri homestead was an original homestead for the Munro family, who settled in Clevedon in the 1850s and owned the property until 1981. It is very special to us. It is furnished with a mixture of antiques and restored and upcycled furniture. We welcome respectful groups, especially families getting together for special occasions. We live next door, so to protect our privacy and our property, Hololio House is not available for 21sts, hens and stag parties, and similar. If you are looking for a venue for such an event, and would like to book the house for accommodation (not the party), talk to us.
Guests are asked to be considerate of us and our neighbours. We have an adjacent urban/rural boundary and all outside speakers must be turned off before 10pm.
We line dry our linen and towels, compost our food waste, and collect rainwater from our roofs. We hope you will support our efforts by reducing waste and recyling while you are with us. We are restoring a wetland just a few hundred metres from the house - a hand is always welcome! See our weddings section -our environmentally conscious guests have an option to forage for flowers and foliage here.
Our Village is small but has everything you need - a pub, two dairies, three restaurants, a gas station. Please see www.clevedon.co.nz for information. The Clevedon Village Farmer's market is a short walk across the road at the Clevedon Showgrounds. It is an absolute must-visit, open 8.30 am to 1.30 pm Sundays www.clevedonfarmersmarket.co.nz Clevedon is a multisport centre - close to beaches, popular road and mountain bike routes, three magnificent Regional Parks, and the Thorps Hill walk/run trail to the top of Thorps Hill. There is a useful list of local walks on the local website. See our Guidebook on AirBnB for restaurant recommendations.
We pick home grown flowers from our gardens for all our guests. Follow us on Instagram @hololiohouse to see our regular posts.
Hololio is Hawaiian for running horse. Purchased by current owner Nick Jones in 1981 from the original settlers, the Munros, the property has recently expanded to incorporate the adjoining historic Dow property, and to reintegrate the Munro homestead, built in 1892.
Since 2001, the owners Nick Jones and Josephine Elworthy have undertaken an extensive tree planting and trail building programme. They are active in the Friends of Te Wairoa river restoration project, and the Clevedon trails project. The trees and trails, with the river, now provide a unique farmland environment for visitors and residents.
